Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic: effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsia, spirochetes, pathogens of trachoma, psittacosis, venereal lymphogranuloma; acts on strains of bacteria resistant to penicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides. Weakly active against acid-resistant bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, protozoa and clostridia. The resistance of microorganisms to chloramphenicol develops relatively slowly.
In normal doses, it acts bacteriostatically. The antimicrobial mechanism of chloramphenicol is associated with impaired synthesis of proteins of microorganisms.
The drug penetrates well into tissues and body fluids; therapeutic concentrations of chloramphenicol when administered locally in the form of eye drops are formed in the vitreous, cornea, iris, and aqueous humor of the eye; the drug does not penetrate the lens.
